Jungle Gems™ by Mayco are bright, non-toxic glazes that incorporate various colored crystals which melt during the firing process. These crystals spread and disperse, creating surprising and colorful effects. Jungle Gems glazes feature a fluid base to encourage greater movement of the crystals.

Initially, these glazes are designed to reach their optimal firing temperature between 990ºC – 1000ºC (cone 06/05). However, they can also be fired at higher temperatures, up to 1240ºC (cone 6), which can generate diverse and interesting results. The label on each product indicates its optimal performance at cone 6.

It is important to note that the crystals present in the glazes tend to flow at higher temperatures. For this reason, extra precautions are recommended when using them on vertical pieces during firing. To ensure satisfactory results, it is suggested to carry out preliminary tests on the type of clay and kiln to be used. Before applying, do not forget to shake the jar well and mix the glaze thoroughly. It is recommended to apply two to three even coats on bisque-fired pieces, using a soft brush and allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.

Due to the weight of the crystals, it is advisable to stir the glaze frequently, as they tend to settle at the bottom of the jar. During the final coat, it may be necessary to redistribute the crystals as needed, creating visual effects in specific areas. To avoid issues, it is suggested not to apply an excessive amount of crystals on the lower part of the piece, as they could stick to the kiln shelf.

Once the crystals melt during firing, they can produce textured surfaces and natural cracks. Because of the difficulty of thoroughly cleaning these surfaces when they come into contact with food, it is recommended to use crystal glazes on decorative objects rather than on utensils intended for food use.
