Jungle Gems™ by Mayco are bright, non-toxic glazes that incorporate a variety of colored crystals that melt during the firing process. These crystals spread and disperse, creating surprising and vibrant color effects. Jungle Gems glazes feature a fluid base that encourages greater crystal movement.

These glazes are initially designed to reach their optimal firing temperature between 990 °C and 1000 °C (cone 06/05). However, they can also be fired at higher temperatures, up to 1240 °C (cone 6), which may produce a wide range of interesting results. The label of each product indicates its optimal performance at cone 6.

It is important to note that the crystals in these glazes tend to flow more at higher temperatures. For this reason, extra precautions are recommended when using them on vertical pieces during firing. To ensure satisfactory results, it is advisable to carry out preliminary tests on the type of clay and kiln that will be used. Before application, remember to shake the bottle well and mix the glaze thoroughly. It is recommended to apply two to three even coats on bisque-fired ware, using a soft brush and allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.

Due to the weight of the crystals, it is advisable to mix the glaze frequently, as they tend to settle at the bottom of the container. During the final coat, it may be necessary to redistribute the crystals as needed, and they will create a visual effect in the corresponding areas. To avoid problems, it is recommended not to apply an excessive amount of crystals to the lower part of the piece, as they may stick to the kiln shelf.

Once the crystals melt during firing, they can create textured surfaces and show natural cracking. Because these surfaces are difficult to clean properly when they come into contact with food, it is recommended to use crystal glazes on decorative objects rather than on items intended for food use.
